Media watch: Gor Mahia’s young squad good for Kenyan football

With the club being forced to rely on fledgling talents, Gor Mahia head coach Andreas Spier has revealed that utilizing young players is a plus for Kenyan football.

K’Ogalo are currently serving a transfer embargo from FIFA for failing to fully settle the dues of Ugandan Shafik Batambuze, Dickson Ambundo from Tanzania, and coach Steven Polack.

Spier who is the former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Technical Director noted that the club’s young players will come of age and contribute to the growth of the sport in the country.

“It is a very young team, many players are at the age of 19, 20 and 21 and this is good for the future of Kenyan football. I was happy with the energy they gave in the draw against Bandari but I was not happy with the result,” said Spier.

Under his role in FKF, the German tactician was mandated with the task of training coaches and growing youth football before leaving the post back in 2018 after two years.

Spier was however disappointed with the 1-1 draw which marked his first dropped points since taking over Gor Mahia after the departure of Mark Harrison.

“We saw a very tough game between two quality teams, I am a little bit disappointed because we were leading for long and even towards the end we had a goal that was minimally offside. The weather was very hot, we are not used to this kind of weather in Nairobi but that should not be a big problem in football,” added Spier.
