The Bukhungu Stadium is a multi-purpose venue located in Kakamega, Kenya. It is primarily used for football matches and serves as the home stadium for Western Stima, a team in the Kenyan Premier League. The stadium has a capacity of 25,000 spectators.
Currently, the stadium is undergoing renovations and expansion. Phase one, which involved the construction of the main stand, has been completed. Phase two, which includes work on the remaining terraces and the running track, has already begun.
The stadium's name is derived from the Luhya word "okhungwa," which means "being chased away." In the 19th century, the grounds were used by Europeans for relaxation while enjoying the cool breeze from the nearby Kakamega Forest. During this time, police would chase away Africans from the field to prevent them from disturbing the Europeans, leading the Luhya people to refer to the area as "shikuri shukhukhungwa," which translates to "the field of being chased away."
