Born 27 years ago in Huruma Estate, Nairobi, Kevin Omondi developed his skills in local fields. He began as a left back or winger but found his passion for goalkeeping at Salama Primary School.
When Gor Mahia signed Kevin Omondi from Sofapaka on 27th August 2023, he was initially seen as a backup for Gad Mathews, the previous season's Golden Glove winner. Though not a regular starter at Sofapaka, Omondi was eager to prove himself.
He was crowned the Golden Glove winner for the 2023/24 season, achieving 19 clean sheets—six more than Patrick Matasi, with three games left to play.
Omondi credits his passion to the inspiration he drew from legendary goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng during his time with the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA). After excelling at Kakamega High School, he played for Nairobi City Stars and Sony Sugar before moving to Wazito FC and finally Sofapaka in 2020.
Gor Mahia sought to strengthen their goalkeeping department after the 2022/23 season, and Omondi's skills impressed the club. Despite facing setbacks, including a red card during the Mashemeji derby, he maintained his position thanks to constant hard work.
He acknowledges the heavy pressure of being a goalkeeper at a high-profile club. "Criticism can be tough, especially when fans expect wins." He aims to impress national team head coach Engin Firat for a potential call-up to the Harambee Stars.
For aspiring goalkeepers, Omondi advises, "If you choose this path, commit wholeheartedly. Never give up. Work hard, stay consistent, and success will follow." His journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication in achieving one's dreams.
