In 1980 , Gor Mahia qualified to play in the CECAFA cup alongside arch rivals Abaluhya FC. David Otti was hired as coach. Otti had an illustrious playing career for Uganda Cranes whom he also coached when they qualified for the Africa Nations cup in 1976. In the CECAFA cup, Gor Mahia made it to the final where they faced Abaluhya in an all Kenyan final. Joe Masiga who had been flown in from Nairobi to reinforce Abaluhya scored the match opener. Gor Mahia reached the final of the Kenya FA cup in 1970 after beating Burnley of Mombasa in the quarters and Abaluhya in the semis. The semi final match against Abaluhya ended in controversial circumstances. In extra time, A free kick was awarded to Gor Mahia who rapidly took the free kick while Abaluhya were still preparing their defence. Centre forward Ben Obala scored. Gor Mahia Football club was formed on February 17 1968 following the amalgamation of Luo Union FC and Luo Stars football clubs. However the history of the club goes back to the 1950s with the formation of Luo Union FC. The original Luo Union FC was formed in the 1950s and was the brainchild of freedom fighter Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
