In 1980 , Gor Mahia qualified to play in the CECAFA cup alongside arch rivals Abaluhya FC. David Otti was hired as coach. Otti had an illustrious playing career for Uganda Cranes whom he also coached when they qualified for the Africa Nations cup in 1976. Gor Mahia reached the final of the Kenya FA cup in 1970 after beating Burnley of Mombasa in the quarters and Abaluhya in the semis. Gor Mahia Football club was formed on February 17 1968 following the amalgamation of Luo Union FC and Luo Stars football clubs. However the history of the club goes back to the 1950s with the formation of Luo Union FC.
