Gor Mahia’s match against Tanzania’s Azam will today be their 65th match in Cecafa Club Challenge Cup History (now branded as CECAFA Kagame Interclub Cup). Gor Mahia’s first match in this competition goes all the way back to January 7th 1975 when they faced Tanzania’s Simba – drawing 1-1. Laban Otieno became the club’s first scorer in this tournament. Since then, they have gone on to lift the cup three times (1980, 1981 and 1985), with two of those victories coming against traditional rivals AFC Leopards. Gor Mahia booked the first 2018 Cecafa Kagame Cup semi-final slot with a well worked 2-1 come back victory over Vipers of Uganda at the National Stadium – Dar-es-Salaam today. The Ugandan Premier League champions took the lead 15 minutes into the match courtesy of a beautiful strike from Tadeo Lwanga. The skipper was set up from yards out and he let go a super strike that dipped past Bonface Oluoch into the net. Gor Mahia will be facing Vipers of Uganda on Sunday in quarter-final tie in the on-going Kageme Cecafa tournament in Tanzania. Gor Mahia secured a quarters place after edging out AS Port of Djibouti (2-0) in their last group match yesterday. Gor Mahia topped Group B based on fair play rule. They tied on points and goal difference with Rayon Sports of Rwanda. Vipers finished second in Group A with five points.
Gor Mahia are through to Cecafa Kageme tournament after beating AS Port of Djibouti 2-0 in the last match of group matches today in Tanzania. Two goals in opening half courtesy of Phillemon Otieno (14th minute) and Charlse Momanyi (40 minute) were enough to close the day for K’Ogalo and set up a date with an opponent to be known tommorow.
