Former Meddie Kagere has opened up on his most cherished moment during his time at Gor Mahia, pointing to the intensity and passion of the famous Mashemeji Derby as his ultimate highlight.
Speaking on the sidelines of the FIFA Series 2026 in Kigali, where Rwanda emerged winners in a mini-tournament featuring Kenya, Estonia, and Grenada, Kagere reflected on his time in Nairobi with fond memories.

“My favourite moment was when I was playing the derby. I used to love it. There is nothing better than playing the derby,” Kagere told SportPesa Blog.
The Mashemeji Derby, contested between Gor Mahia and arch-rivals AFC Leopards, remains one of the fiercest fixtures in East African football, and Kagere relished every second of it.
Despite leaving the club in 2018, the former Rwandan international still ranks among the top scorers in the derby, with three goals to his name. Only Sammy Onyango (6), Dan Sserunkuma (6), and Wilberforce Mulamba (4) have scored more in the iconic clash.

Kagere also revealed he continues to follow Gor Mahia closely and urged the record Kenyan champions to maintain their momentum in the ongoing title race.
“I still miss Nairobi. I am always following the games as I still follow the page. They have to proceed with momentum because they are a big team in the country. That is why I had to play for them and we got success.”
With the 2025/26 Kenyan Premier League title race heating up, Kagere’s message is clear: beat Ingwe and bring the crown back to K’Ogalo.
