Former Harambee Stars head coach Engin Fırat has sadly passed away after reportedly suffering a heart attack.
The Turkish tactician, who previously led the Kenya national football team, was widely known for his passionate leadership and dedication to rebuilding Kenyan football during his time in charge.
Fırat took over as Harambee Stars head coach in September 2021, stepping in at a difficult time when Kenyan football was facing administrative challenges and international suspension. Despite the circumstances, he worked to rebuild the national team and give opportunities to emerging local talents.
During his tenure, Fırat oversaw Kenya’s participation in several international matches, including AFCON and FIFA World Cup qualification fixtures, as he attempted to restore the competitiveness of the national side.
Before his stint in Kenya, the coach had a long international career. He served as an assistant coach at Turkish giants Fenerbahçe S.K. and also coached the Moldova national football team, among other clubs and national sides across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Fırat was often vocal about the need to improve football structures in Kenya and consistently defended local players.
His passing is expected to draw tributes from players, coaches, football officials, and fans who interacted with him during his time with the national team.
More details regarding his death and tributes from the football fraternity are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
🕊️ May he rest in peace.
