Gor Mahia FC head coach Charles Akonnor has admitted their goalless draw against Kariobangi Sharks FC was evenly balanced, with either side capable of claiming victory.
The FKF Premier League clash played at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani on Saturday saw both teams create chances but fail to find the breakthrough in a tightly contested encounter.
“The game could go either way. They had chances to score, and any side could have lost the game. So the result is a fair outcome,” Akonnor stated after the match.
Sharks Disrupt Gor Mahia Rhythm
Akonnor credited Kariobangi Sharks for their tactical discipline, noting that they effectively disrupted Gor Mahia’s flow and prevented them from settling into their usual style of play.
“The opponent is a team that knows their game. They disturbed us and never let us settle, to their credit. The first half was not that good, and we wanted to come up for the final half more assertively, but it was not to be,” he added.
Despite improving after the break, K’Ogalo could not capitalize on their moments, settling for a point in front of their home supporters.
Akonnor Unhappy Despite Clean Sheet
While the result ensured Gor Mahia extended their unbeaten run, the Ghanaian tactician expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s overall performance.
“One point is okay; a fair result. But for us, we didn’t play the way we have been playing; I personally was not satisfied with our performance. The positive thing to take from the game is that we did not lose.”
The draw keeps Gor Mahia at the summit of the FKF Premier League table with 57 points from 26 matches, maintaining their title charge with eight games remaining.
Selection Battle: Stanley Told to Fight
Akonnor also addressed squad competition, sending a clear message to Ben Stanley regarding his place in the team.
“Ben Stanley has to fight to get his place back… somebody else has taken his position.”
The statement highlights growing competition within the squad, as Akonnor emphasizes merit-based selection during the crucial final stretch of the season.
Focus Shifts to Title Run-In
With the title race heating up, Gor Mahia will now shift focus to upcoming fixtures, aiming to rediscover their best form as they push to secure the FKF Premier League crown.
