Engin Firat, the former head coach of Kenya’s national football team, has been laid to rest in his home country of Turkey.

Firat was buried on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Göynük, a town located in the Kemer district of Antalya Province. His burial followed Janazah prayers conducted after the Dhuhr (midday) prayer, in accordance with Islamic burial traditions.

The respected Turkish tactician reportedly collapsed at an airport on Sunday after suffering a suspected heart attack. Despite efforts to assist him, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward, sending shockwaves through the football community in Kenya and beyond.

During his tenure with Harambee Stars, Firat was widely credited for instilling discipline and tactical organization within the national side. He worked closely with local players and administrators, earning respect for his professionalism and commitment to developing Kenyan football.

His passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from football stakeholders, players, and fans who remembered him as a dedicated coach who believed strongly in the potential of Kenyan players on the international stage.

Firat’s legacy in Kenyan football remains tied to his efforts to strengthen the national team and his belief in building a competitive squad capable of challenging on the continental stage.

May his soul rest in peace.
