African football clubs are set to benefit from a major financial boost after Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confédération Africaine de Football, announced a significant increase in prize money for both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup starting from the 2025/26 season.
Champions League Winner to Receive $6 Million
The winner of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League will now receive USD 6 million, representing a 50% increase from the previous amount. The increment comes after CAF added USD 2 million to the prize fund for the competition’s champion.
Since Dr Motsepe assumed leadership of CAF in 2021, the Champions League prize money has grown dramatically from USD 2.5 million to USD 6 million, marking a 140% increase.

Confederation Cup Prize Doubles to $4 Million
CAF has also approved a major increase for the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, with the winner now set to receive USD 4 million starting in the 2025/26 season.
This represents a 100% increase, with the prize fund rising by USD 2 million.
Over the last five years under Motsepe’s leadership, the Confederation Cup prize money has surged from USD 1.25 million to USD 4 million, reflecting a 220% increase.

More Money for African Clubs
The new adjustments will push overall prize money and solidarity payments to African clubs beyond USD 42 million per season.
CAF says this represents a 114% increase in financial support to clubs since Motsepe was elected president of the continental football governing body.
The move is expected to strengthen club football across Africa, helping teams invest more in infrastructure, player development, and competitiveness on the continental stage.
