Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has agreed to surrender critical county functions to the National Government as part of intensified preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
Following consultations with President William Ruto, it was agreed that the National Government will take charge of garbage collection, road infrastructure, and water supply in Nairobi three sectors considered crucial to meeting CAF standards ahead of the continental tournaments.
The move is aimed at fast-tracking infrastructure upgrades and improving service delivery in the capital, which will host major AFCON matches, fan zones, and international delegations.
County and national officials say the new arrangement will enhance coordination, reduce bureaucracy, and ensure Nairobi presents a world-class image during AFCON 2027.
