Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has hailed his side’s tactical discipline and clinical first-half display following a dominant 3–0 victory over Sofapaka at Nyayo National Stadium — a result that further cements K’Ogalo’s position at the summit of the FKF Premier League table.
The Green Army wasted no time asserting control, executing their game plan to perfection and putting the contest beyond reach before the halftime whistle.
“We were tactically very sound. We played today’s game at ease, and all the things that we wanted to do, we did in the first half. We were a bit superior to the opponent,” Akonnor said after the match.

While pleased with the overall performance, the Gor Mahia tactician challenged his players to be more ruthless in the final third, especially after creating a flurry of chances in the second half.
“What was not so good is what we did in the second half. We created a lot of chances, but we must be ambitious. It doesn’t matter that we scored three — when we create chances, we must score more. But we can only be proud of the boys.”
Akonnor also shed light on his substitutions, explaining that fresh legs were introduced to help manage the game while maintaining attacking pressure.

“After about 20 minutes of the second half, we thought of managing the game, so we brought in fresh legs. We still created chances. It was unfortunate for Assifuah — he made a lot of attempts and showed his qualities, he was just unlucky not to score.”
Set-piece efficiency once again proved decisive for K’Ogalo, with central defenders Frank Odhiambo and Sylvester Owino finding the back of the net — something Akonnor credited to focused training during the week.
“It is really exciting because this week we trained a lot on set pieces and encouraged them. I am happy for Frank because it was his first goal. The team has gotten momentum, the spirit is there, the atmosphere is good, and we want to continue with that.”
With Gor Mahia now firmly perched at the top of the table, Akonnor urged calm and consistency as the title race intensifies.

“It means a lot, but we still have to keep watching around and make sure we keep it going. It is not over until it is over. AFC Leopards are trying their best to push us, so it is a very good competition. What is important is that we maintain our focus.”
Buoyed by confidence, unity, and growing belief within the squad, Gor Mahia will now look to build on this momentum as they continue their relentless push for league glory.
