Plans are underway to establish the Gor Mahia Legends for Life Sports Academy and Community Outreach Program, a legacy-driven initiative inspired by the proud history, achievements, and enduring values of Gor Mahia Football Club, Kenya’s most successful and widely supported football institution.
Founded in 1968, Gor Mahia has built an unmatched legacy, highlighted by multiple Kenyan league titles, record domestic cup successes, and the club’s crowning achievement, winning the 1987 CAF Africa Cup Winners’ Cup, making Gor Mahia the first and only Kenyan club to lift a continental trophy. That tradition of excellence now forms the backbone of this community-focused initiative.
Led by former Gor Mahia players and club legends who once proudly wore the green and white, the program draws inspiration from iconic figures whose commitment, discipline, and fighting spirit defined the club’s golden eras.
Names such as Austin “Makamu” Oduor, Peter “Kabaselleh” Dawo, George Onyango “Barrack”, Abbey Nasur “Ataba Mario”, and other celebrated legends continue to symbolize the Gor Mahia identity of courage, flair, and resilience.
Speaking on behalf of the group, spokesperson James Goro Oronge said the academy aims to pass on the true Gor Mahia culture—a winning mentality, unity, discipline, and deep community connection—to the next generation.
The core objectives of the Gor Mahia Legends for Life program include:
- Providing structured football training and mentorship to 200 youth aged 8 to 18, guided by Gor Mahia legends and certified coaches, instilling professionalism and the hunger to compete at the highest level
- Offering educational support, life skills development, and mentorship, reinforcing the club’s long-held belief that football should open doors beyond the pitch.
- Establishing sustainable revenue streams through coaching fees, sponsorships, and grants to ensure long-term impact and continuity
Rooted in the Sirkal philosophy and the club’s tradition of giving back, the initiative will actively seek partnerships with corporates, football stakeholders, and development organizations.
Partners will gain strong brand visibility and positive association with a club whose name resonates across Kenya and the continent, while contributing meaningfully to youth empowerment and grassroots football development.
Further details regarding the program’s rollout, partnerships, and official launch will be announced in due course.
