Gor Mahia claimed a crucial victory against Kakamega Homeboyz with a scoreline of 1-0 in today’s Sportpesa League match played at Moi International Sports Center – Kasarani, securing maximum points in a match filled with near misses and tight defensive plays.
The match kicked off with an electric atmosphere as Gor Mahia wasted no time asserting their dominance on home turf. Just 17 minutes into the first half, the home team took the lead thanks to a stunning strike from captain Alpha Onyango.
Kenya’s Harambee Stars midfielder unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box that left Homeboyz’s goalkeeper with no chance. The roar from the crowd echoed through the stadium as Gor Mahia celebrated the early advantage.

As the first half progressed, Gor Mahia maintained control of possession and continued to apply pressure on their opponents. The midfield trio of Alpha Onyango, Musa Shariff and Ben Stanley Omondi created numerous opportunities, with Shariff particularly outstanding in his efforts to press and disrupt Homeboyz’s defensive organization. However, despite their efforts, several chances went begging, notably a close header from Felix that sailed just inches over the bar.
Homeboyz struggled to find their footing under Gor Mahia’s relentless pressure, suffering an early booking as one of their player received a yellow card for repeated fouls on Alpha Onyango. The visitors managed to muster a few attempts towards the end of the first half, but they were largely contained by a solid Gor Mahia defense led by Bryton Onyona.
As the second half began, Gor Mahia opted for tactical adjustments, substituting Enock Morrison for Fidel Origa. Homeboyz made three substitutions of their own, hoping to reinvigorate their attack, but Gor Mahia’s backline proved to be resolute.

The home team continued to create chances, with a notable double substitution in the 75th minute bringing on Austin Odhiambo and Mark Shaban in a bid to freshen up their attacking options. Despite several attempts, including a close-range shot from Shariff that was expertly blocked, Gor Mahia could not extend their lead.
With time winding down, Homeboyz intensified their search for an equalizer, pushing more men forward. However, Bryton Onyona remained steadfast, thwarting every effort to breach the Gor Mahia defense.
In the dying moments of the match, the referee indicated five minutes of stoppage time, giving Homeboyz one last chance to salvage a point. They threw everything at Gor Mahia, but the defense held firm as the final whistle signaled the end of the contest.

The 1-0 victory not only adds three vital points to Gor Mahia’s tally but also demonstrates their ability to grind out results against tough opponents. Coach Charles Akonnor praised his players for their commitment and defensive resilience in the post-match interview, stating, “We played well and showed great character. It wasn’t easy, but we did what we had to do to secure the win.”
As Gor Mahia celebrates this hard-fought victory, attention now turns to their next match against Nairobi United, where they will aim to build on this momentum and continue their charge towards the top of the league standings.
