Gor Mahia’s goalkeeper, Gad Mathews, was hospitalized due to a severe abdominal illness, leading to his absence from the crucial ODM@20 final match against Bandari at Mbaraki Stadium yesterday. The incident has sparked concern among fans and teammates alike as they rally in support of their ailing player.
Reports indicate that the crisis began early Friday morning when Mathews experienced intense abdominal pain. Team Doctor Brian Odongo described the situation, stating that the pain “gradually worsened over time,” necessitating Mathews’ urgent admission to a local Mombasa hospital for immediate medical evaluation and care.
“On the morning of Friday, Gad Mathews experienced abdominal pain that gradually worsened over time. Due to the increasing severity of the pain, he was taken to the hospital where he has been admitted for further investigations and treatment,” Dr. Odongo detailed, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring.
As the rest of the Gor Mahia squad prepares to travel to Nairobi today via the scheduled 3 PM train, Mathews’ condition does not permit him to undertake the long journey.
Instead, he is expected to be discharged from the hospital later today to catch a flight to the capital, where he will continue to receive necessary medical attention.
In a show of solidarity, Team Captain Philemon Otieno and a second team doctor, Joash Odhiambo, have chosen to remain in Mombasa to facilitate Mathews’ discharge and ensure his safe transit to the airport.
Their presence at the hospital underscores the camaraderie and support within the team during this challenging time.
The entire Gor Mahia family, including fans and fellow players, have united in wishing Gad Mathews a swift and full recovery, hoping to see him back on the pitch soon.
The team’s dedication to their goalkeeper exemplifies the strong bonds formed within the sport, highlighting the importance of community and support in times of need.
