Gor Mahia midfielder Alpha Onyango is eager and thrilled about the chance to represent Kenya in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will co-host.
This edition is special for the region, and Onyango sees it as an exciting opportunity to showcase his skills on a continental stage.
“It’s a massive platform! For me, it’s a wonderful chance to highlight my talent, and it could really help take my career to the next level,” Onyango shared with CAF Online. “It’s a great opportunity to be noticed across Africa and beyond.”
Even though it was a tough domestic season for Gor Mahia, where they missed out on the FKF Premier League title to Kenya Police and faced an unexpected defeat in the FKF Cup final against Nairobi United, Onyango remains positive about what lies ahead.
Kenya has been drawn into a challenging CHAN group filled with heavyweights like Morocco, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia, but Onyango isn’t backing down.
“We have a tough group with big names like Morocco, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia,” he noted. “I can’t pick just one game — they’re all thrilling matchups, and we’re pumped for each one!”
His confidence comes not only from his club performance with Gor Mahia but also from a belief in the bright future of local footballers in Kenya. Since CHAN features only players active in their domestic leagues, it’s a fantastic opportunity for talents like Onyango to shine.
Onyango’s journey from Gor Mahia Youth to the Harambee Stars squad is a true testament to his hard work and determination. He reflects fondly on his experiences and gives credit to the veteran players who have guided him along the way.
“It’s been a tough but rewarding journey for me. I started at Gor Mahia Youth right after high school and have worked really hard to get here,” he said. “The past two seasons have been fantastic, and I’ve learned so much from senior players like Richard Odada, Michael Olunga, and Anthony Akumu. I’m still growing and learning every day.”
As he gears up for CHAN, Onyango knows that a standout performance could lead to exciting opportunities beyond Kenya. His CHAN debut could be a defining moment in a career already filled with determination and promise!
