Benson Omalla Leaves Gor Mahia for Overseas Opportunity

Gor Mahia forward Benson Omalla has left the club to pursue a new opportunity abroad. The striker left the country on Thursday, July 3, to make his dream of securing a move overseas a reality.

Omalla rejoined Gor Mahia after a challenging spell abroad with Lebanese Premier League side Al-Safa. His move to the Lebanese club came after a previous attempt to join the Algerian side JS Saoura fell through due to paperwork delays.

However, Omalla’s time in Lebanon was short and troubled, marked by unpaid wages and security concerns. The Lebanese Premier League had been suspended due to military strikes in October 2024, and although the league resumed later, Omalla chose not to return.

He went three months without receiving his salary, prompting him to terminate his contract in January 2025, citing FIFA regulations that allow players to do so if they have not been paid for two consecutive months. After terminating his contract, Omalla returned to Gor Mahia.

Upon his return, Omalla was sidelined for some time as his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) was held by the Lebanese club, which prevented him from participating in competitive matches.

The dispute escalated to FIFA, which ultimately cleared him to play for Gor Mahia in April 2025. His return was viewed as a significant boost for the team, who were in a tight title race, but his impact was minimal.

Gor Mahia finished second in the FKF Premier League and lost in the FKF Cup final, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against Nairobi United at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Omalla’s return marked his third stint with the club; he had previously played from 2020 to 2021 and from 2022 to 2024, contributing significantly to their back-to-back FKF Premier League titles with a total of 45 goals during those seasons.

Despite his disappointing experiences in Lebanon, Omalla’s dream of moving abroad remains alive. Reports from Michezo Afrika indicate that he is seeking new opportunities beyond Africa, with interest from clubs in Europe and Asia.
