Nairobi United is fired up to keep their impressive FKF Cup run going by taking down Gor Mahia and scoring a spot in the CAF Champions League. They’re gearing up for an intense final showdown against Gor Mahia, potentially at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
The pressure is on since the winner gets a ticket to next season’s continental stage, joining the recently crowned league champions, Kenya Police FC.
The giant-slayer are not buying into the underdog story. Team captain Daniel Bichiok Dang opened up to Pulse Sports, saying they won’t let the pressure of facing Gor Mahia get to them.
“Football is played on the pitch, and we don’t feel the pressure as long as we stick to our game plan,” he said, sounding pretty confident.
Nairobi United has pulled off some big upsets, knocking out Tusker FC, KCB, and Kakamega Homeboyz on their way to this crucial match.
Bichiok gave credit to their coach, Nicolas Muyoti, for helping the team develop a tough mentality.
“We’ve built our resilience and mental toughness thanks to him,” he explained.
“Among the players and the coach, nobody’s underestimating us because they’ve seen what we can do. Maybe some fans think we’re the underdogs, but the team knows we’re strong.”
As for Gor Mahia’s reputation, Bichiok isn’t too worried. He downplayed the significance of going up against a team with such a huge history.
“It would be nice to win, but Gor is just another team. Beating them is no different than taking down Tusker or Homeboyz,” he said.
Gor Mahia, on the other hand, comes into the FKF Cup as the defending league champions but is still reeling from losing the 2024/25 FKF Premier League title to Kenya Police FC. Now, all their hopes for the CAF Champions League rely on this cup match, putting them under pressure.
“I don’t think we have anything to prove. We just want to win. Taking them down isn’t out of reach—we’ve been doing that to teams just like them,” he boldly warned.
In a heartfelt moment, Bichiok admitted he’s always had a soft spot for Gor Mahia as a fan, but he’s clear that there won’t be any favors on matchday. “Playing against them feels great. I’ve loved this team for a long time, so it’s special to be up against them,” he said.
As Nairobi United looks to finish off their incredible cup run with a chance at continental football, all eyes will be on their matchup with Gor Mahia—a clash of tradition versus momentum, legacy versus hunger.
