Gor Mahia forward Benson Omalla is raising the stakes before the Mashemeji Derby against their rivals, AFC Leopards.
As the season comes to a close, Omalla emphasizes that the June 2 match at Raila Odinga Stadium is more than just a rivalry; it could determine the title winner.
Omalla, who scored in last year’s derby, understands what it takes to win this important game.
“For us players, the Mashemeji Derby is usually a big game,” Omalla said. “We cannot afford to lose points or the game if we want to win the league.” Omalla said.
Gor Mahia currently ranks third with 54 points, just behind Tusker with 55 points and leaders Kenya Police with 61 points. A loss against the Leopards could seriously impact their title chances. However, Omalla believes a win could boost their title hopes, especially if Kenya Police loses to Shabana.
Playing at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, a place with strong Gor Mahia support, the team is counting on their fans to help them succeed. Omalla asks the Green Army to come in large numbers and show their support.
“To our fans, I urge you to come out and support us. When we see the green and white colors, we will give our best and aim for victory,” he said. “We have to push ourselves to give our fans bragging rights.” He added.
Gor Mahia’s road to the title is tough. They need to beat AFC Leopards and also win their last match against Ulinzi Stars while hoping Kenya Police loses points. With players like Omalla leading the way, Gor Mahia’s title dream is still alive.
