Kenya’s most celebrated football club, Gor Mahia, faced a shocking defeat as the relegation-threatened City Stars capitalized on early scoring opportunities during their FKF Premier League (KPL) encounter held at Dandora Stadium.
In a match that K’Ogalo Head Coach Sinisa Mihic had claimed would be a straightforward win, the defending FKFPL champions were caught off guard by what may have been the fastest goal of the season. A mere five minutes into the game, Hansel Ochieng found the back of the net with a well-placed shot, stunning the Gor Mahia side.
Responding swiftly, Gor Mahia equalized just five minutes later. Enock Morisson executed a perfectly lofted pass that connected with Benson Omalla, who displayed remarkable composure under pressure as he skillfully maneuvered past City Stars’ goalkeeper, Elvis Ochoro, to score in the 10th minute.
The momentum shifted once again in the 17th minute when City Stars struck back after Hansel Ochieng was fouled by Mathews inside the penalty area, earning a penalty kick. Vincent Owino confidently stepped up to take the shot and expertly converted it, restoring the lead for the Kawangware boys at 2-1.
Despite Gor Mahia’s persistent attempts to find an equalizer, City Stars demonstrated impressive resilience, not allowing any more goals as they maintained their slender lead into the half-time interval.
The second half saw Gor Mahia ramp up the intensity, with Coach Sinisa Mihic making strategic substitutions to increase both tempo and possession. He introduced Geoffrey Ochieng in place of Levin Odhiambo, hoping to energize the midfield. However, despite their efforts, the Gor Mahia attack struggled to penetrate the disciplined and well-organized defense of City Stars.
At the one-hour mark, Michic made additional changes, bringing on Chris Ochieng, Alpha Onyango, and Boniface Omondi to inject new energy into the squad, but the Kawangware boys remained resolute in their defense, thwarting each attempt to equalize.
As the final whistle blew, the City Stars celebrated a monumental victory, marking a stunning double over Gor Mahia this season. The win not only boosted their morale as they fight against relegation but also served as a harsh reminder for the defending champions of the unpredictability and competitiveness of the KPL.
