Only three points separate Gor Mahia from the league’s top title contender, Kenya Police FC, after their narrow victory over KCB on Monday morning, which ended with a score of 1-0 thanks to a goal by Austin Odhiambo.
The match, originally scheduled for Sunday, was postponed to Monday morning, April 7, after the match officials deemed the venue unfit for play due to heavy rainfall. An announcement on the FKF Premier League’s X page stated, “The KCB vs. Gor Mahia match was unable to be played due to poor pitch conditions and will be played tomorrow, Monday, April 7, at 10 a.m.”
The game began with both teams displaying determination to outperform each other. The intensity quickly escalated, with Gor Mahia’s Kennedy Onyango sustaining an injury just six minutes into the match and being replaced by Geoffrey Ochieng.
In the 33rd minute, a free-kick goal from Austin Odhiambo breathed life into the game, giving the 22-time champion Gor Mahia a much-needed boost. Just before halftime, defender Sylvester Owino received a yellow card for a foul. The first half concluded with Gor Mahia leading 1-0.
The second half reignited the rivalry, even on the touchline, as Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic was shown a red card for dissent in the 9th minute. KCB came close to equalizing in the 64th minute with a well-placed free kick, but Gor’s goalkeeper, Gad Mathews, executed a brilliant save to maintain their lead.
The solitary goal from the first half proved decisive, securing Gor Mahia’s victory over KCB and firmly placing them in the title race. With this crucial win, the 22-time champions climbed to 46 points with a game in hand, just two points behind second-placed Tusker FC, who have 48 points, and three points behind league leaders Kenya Police, who sit at 49 points.
