Former Gor Mahia defender Ronney Onyango has officially signed with Sogndal Fotball, marking an exciting new chapter in his career. The contract, which extends until the end of the 2027 season, represents a fresh start after a period of uncertainty.
Eager to honor his late father, Ronney has chosen the unique shirt number 88, commemorating both his father’s birthday and his own. “I chose to play with the number 88 to honor my father after he passed away. I play for him, and it feels good to have him with me on the field. I’m sure he’s proud of me today,” he expressed during his unveiling.
As a right-back for the Harambee Stars, Ronney brings invaluable experience from his time with Wazito FC and Gor Mahia, where he played a pivotal role in securing the league title and competing in the prestigious African Champions League.
After a recent match where the Harambee Stars drew 3-3 against Gambia and faced a narrow 2-1 defeat to Gabon, Ronney remains focused on his journey.
“It was great to come to Sogndal for a trial match. I felt at home from the very first moment, and everyone at the club was fantastic toward me. My teammates, coaching staff, and everyone around were very friendly and helpful,” he reflected.
“Signing this contract is a big deal, and I’m very happy. I really wanted to join Sogndal after the trial, and now I just have to keep working to improve. I’m looking forward to getting started and achieving great things together with the team.”
On their website, Sogndal Fotball were happy to sigh the Kenya right-back player and wrote the following.
Sogndal Fotball and Gor Mahia FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of defender Ronney Onyango Otieno, born on August 8, 2001. The agreement will last until the end of the 2027 season.
Ronney Onyango Otieno is a talented right-back who represents the Kenyan national team. He has previously played for Wazito FC and Gor Mahia, both prominent clubs in Kenya’s football scene. Gor Mahia competes in the Kenyan Premier League and is regarded as one of the best teams in the country. Throughout his career, Ronney has won the league title and the Community Shield, in addition to competing in the African Champions League with his former club, where top teams from across Africa compete.
At the end of February, following a training camp, Ronney participated in a trial match with Sogndal. He sat on the bench in a game against Lyn, started against Hødd, played in Ålesund, and again started in the match against Stabæk. After several weeks of training and friendly matches, he performed well. In mid-March, he joined the national team, where he played two full matches during the World Cup qualifiers for Kenya. The first match against Gambia ended in a 3-3 draw, with Ronney being named the best player of the match, while the second match resulted in a 2-1 loss to Aubameyang and Gabon.
Now back in Sogndal, we are excited to officially present him as our newest signing!
