Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, is set to host the return leg of the Masemeji Derby on May 11, 2025. It will be a special occasion as it will be the first match played in the newly renovated stadium.
Originally, the game was supposed to take place on Sunday, April 6, 2025 and Nyayo Stadium, but the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) decided to postpone it due to some chaotic scenes where thousands of fans filled the facility, pushing security efforts to their limits.
FKF President Hussein Mohamed shared that they’re taking this time to reassess and plan for an even better experience.
“It’s clear that the fans are back, and their love for football is shining bright! We need to focus on security, safety, and proper planning, which is why we’ve made this decision. We’re taking about two to three weeks to get everything ready for the derby,” he said in an interview with Nation Sport.
This extra time means the FKF can push for the finishing touches on Kasarani, which is almost complete—just a few final details to sort out, including the running track! This derby will mark the first match held in a revamped stadium with a capacity of 60,000, which is also gearing up to host the CHAN 2025 in August and the AFCON 2027 tournament.
You may remember that back in December 2023, the stadium closed for renovations, which threw a wrench in the Harambee Stars’ playing schedule, forcing them to play their home matches abroad since Nyayo Stadium was also closed.
The government is really dedicated to making a positive change! The renovations have included new, comfy seats in the terraces, upgraded security, and floodlights for those thrilling night matches. They’ve also revamped the changing rooms, VIP area, and playing surface, plus added canopies to keep fans comfortable in all kinds of weather.
Gor Mahia will be playing host, and fans can expect a match that’s even more electrifying than the first leg, which ended in a goalless draw.
The return of fans to the stadium reflects a newfound energy in Kenyan football, thanks to the fresh FKF leadership. This new team is committed to reviving the excitement around the sport and ensuring everything runs smoother than before. We can’t wait to see you there!
