Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic has expressed concerns over their lack of firepower upfront, stating that the squad’s offensive struggles could be solved with the availability of striker Benson Omalla.
Omalla rejoined Gor Mahia on the final day of the mid-season transfer window, but has not featured due to an unresolved dispute with his former club, Lebanese Premier League side Safa SC.
On Sunday, Gor Mahia played out to a goalless draw in the Mashemeji Derby against arch-rivals AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium.
Both teams squandered several clear-cut chances, with Mihic emphasizing that Omala’s presence could have helped fix their attacking woes.
“This team needs a player likeOmalla—a true striker who can convert chances easily. Right now, that is our biggest problem, and it is beyond my control,” the Croatian tactician said.
Last week, Gor Mahia CEO Raymond Oruo confirmed thatOmalla would miss the derby as his case is being handled by FIFA.
Speaking exclusively to Mozzart Sport, Oruo stated that the matter had been referred to FIFA’s Player Status Committee.
“There is no clearance yet. FIFA is now handling the issue,” Oruo confirmed.
Omalla’s move to Lebanon was facilitated by former Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat, according to the player’s father, Peter Oluoch.
“Firat took my son to Lebanon. He had an agent before, but they parted ways. I am not worried about any external influence for financial gain,” Oluoch told the Daily Nation.
Despite security concerns in Lebanon, Oluoch remained optimistic, stating that he was pleased his son had secured another opportunity to play abroad after an unsuccessful stint in Sweden in 2021.
“This is his third day in Lebanon, and I am happy that he has finally achieved his dream of playing professional football outside Kenya. This opportunity could be vital for his career growth and financial stability,” he added.
Gor Mahia will face KCB FC on Sunday as they continue their campaign.
