All roads will lead to Dandora Sports Ground on Sunday, when Gor Mahia meets Division Two side KSG Ogopa FC in the FKF Cup preliminary match.
The underdogs have made it clear that they intend to challenge the FKFPL giants and prove their capabilities. Speaking to Pulse Sports, KSG Ogopa’s Team Manager, Peter Mutwiri, expressed confidence ahead of the fixture.
“We have been following Gor Mahia closely because we are big fans of Kenyan football. We know what Gor is capable of, but we also know what KSG can do. On Sunday, we are going to show Kenyans that we are not just underdogs but a team with ambitions to climb the Kenyan football pyramid,” Mutwiri stated in a telephone interview.
K’Ogalo has struggled in front of goal in their recent matches and is still looking for rhythm under new Croatian head coach Sinisa Mihic, who has been in charge for just two games. According to Mutwiri, this presents an opportunity for his team.
“It is definitely something we are keen on and looking to take advantage of. The pressure is on them; we are just coming to play our football the way we always do. Being one of the biggest clubs in Kenya, they are expected to win, but we will do our best to make it difficult for them,” he added.
KSG has been performing exceptionally well in the Division Two Eastern Zone League, where they currently top the standings with 17 points from nine games (five wins, two draws, and two losses). The team has strengthened its squad during the January transfer window, notably bringing back former player Rooney Kola.
Kola, who previously led the team in the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom Nairobi regional finals, has gained valuable experience with FKF Premier League side Nairobi City Stars and NSL sides Naivas and Darajani Gogo. His return adds depth and experience to the team as they prepare to take on Gor Mahia.
The last time KSG Ogopa faced a Premier League team in the FKF Cup, they put up a spirited fight against Bandari but lost 2-0 in 2020. This time, they hope to go one step further and secure a historic result against the giants.
