Defending champions Gor Mahia are set to face Tusker FC in a FKF Premier League clash this evening at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
With the return of midfielder Austin Odhiambo, the most celebrated club in Kenya is eager to reverse their fortunes after suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Brewers in their last encounter.
Austin, the Most Valuable Player of the 2023/24 league, resumed training after being sidelined for weeks, providing renewed hope for the defending champions. He last played for K’Ogalo in the reverse fixture against the Brewers on January 19, where he scored the lone goal in their 2-1 loss. His absence has been deeply felt, as the team has struggled to score, a challenge that newly appointed Gor Mahia coach Sinisa Mihic has been working hard to resolve.
The Gor Mahia coach will be relieved to have the influential midfielder back, as he currently leads the team in scoring with six goals. Mihic’s first game in charge ended in a 2-1 victory against Mathare United, but the team particularly missed Odhiambo’s presence. The head coach is looking for a stronger performance against Tusker.
“We must be more clinical in front of goal. We missed too many chances and became nervous, but we eventually improved our play. Moving forward, we need to finish our chances,” Mihic stated during a training session on Saturday.
Gor Mahia, still in pursuit of their 22nd league title, is determined to avenge their earlier loss. A victory tonight would bring them within four points of leaders Kenya Police FC, with a game in hand—the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby ahead.
