Finally, the much-awaited clash between Gor Mahia and Yanga SC is set to electrify Siaya’s Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium. Gor Mahia will go head-to-head with Tanzanian football giants Young Africans (Yanga SC) in a high-profile preseason friendly on February 22, 2025.
The much-anticipated match is scheduled to take place at the newly inaugurated Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya County.
The friendly match between the two football powerhouses was initially planned for the opening of the state-of-the-art stadium on January 2, 2025.
However, Yanga SC had to honor their CAF Champions League commitments against TP Mazembe, forcing a postponement.
The game now stands as a marquee event on the regional football calendar.
“We will conduct a robust preseason; we have already received invitations from various places, including South Africa. Kaizer Chiefs have extended an invitation, and Mr. Raila Odinga has invited us to Kisumu,” Yanga SC President Hersi Ally Said explained last year.
The announcement was further confirmed by Siaya Governor James Orengo, who emphasized the historic significance of the match.
“All football lovers, and fans around the country and East African region; mark your calendars,” Orengo said in an official statement.
“The most successful club in Tanzanian football history YANGA FC will square it out with the Kenyan giants, the Mighty Gor Mahia, K’Ogallo Sirkal at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium on the 22nd February, 2025,” the statement added.
The friendship and collaboration between Gor Mahia and Yanga SC have grown significantly in recent years. This has been fueled by exchanges of visits and initiatives involving officials from both clubs, often facilitated by leaders in the region such as Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga.
Governor Orengo expressed his gratitude to both teams for their collaboration in making this match a reality.
“I thank both teams for accepting our gracious invitation and invite all of you to the great County of Siaya to watch this historic, iconic, and mouthwatering game of football,” he said.
The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium is expected to be filled to capacity, with fans from both Kenya and Tanzania eager to witness their teams in action.
Gor Mahia boast a storied legacy in Kenyan football, while Yanga SC is widely regarded as the most successful club in Tanzanian football history.
This clash promises to be more than just a preseason friendly. It is a celebration of football culture, regional unity, and the enduring rivalry between two of East Africa’s biggest clubs.
