Ronney’s move to Singida hits a snag

Gor Mahia right back Ronney Onyango’s move to Tanzania side Singida has hit a snag. Onyango has been the subject of interest from Singida and was reported to be on his way out of Gor Mahia this month after the two clubs reached an agreement, with the player also said to have given a green-light to the move.

However, with Gor Mahia confirming his imminent departure at the weekend, the full-back made a U-turn, turning down the offer to join the big-spending Tanzanian with an eye on a move elsewhere when his contract ends in June.

This has cause the bif spending Singida FC to demand their money back estimated to a tune of $40,000 (Ksh5.17 million).

Earlier, Gor Mahia secretary general Sam Ochola had confirmed that the transfer was already in motion with the FKF Premier League champions having pocketed part of the agreed fee.

“The player informed us a few weeks ago that he had agreed terms with Singida and we have been talking to them and indicated that we don’t have a problem letting him go. He will leave this month and join the Tanzanian side,” Ochola was quoted on Saturday, a day before the player refuted the claims.

But the turn of event say the prolific attacking righ bad rejecting the offer under unclear circumstances. Contacted by Mozzart Sport for clarification, Gor Mahia CEO Raymond Oruo did not wish to comment on the transfer fee but admitted that the move has hit a snag.

“It’s true that Singida has written to us demanding a refund if we cannot complete the transfer. We’re unsure of the exact amount, but the initial agreed sum was USD 40,000. We are working to resolve the issue internally and hope to find an amicable solution soon,” a source told Mozzart Sport.

Onyango, who joined Gor Mahia from Wazito FC in 2022, is currently on international duty with Harambee Stars in Zanzibar for the Mapinduzi Cup and will be hoping to be involved when Kenya face Kilimanjaro Stars on Tuesday, having missed their opener against Burkina Faso on Saturday.
