Rooney Onyango set to leave Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia full-back Ronney Onyango is set to leave the club for Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars this month.

Onyango, who is a key member of the squad, has been lured by the big-spending Tanzanian side which is home to Kenyan stars Elvis Rupia and Joash Onyango with Gor Mahia secretary general Sam Ocholla confirming his impending departure.

“The player informed us a few weeks ago that he had agreed terms with Singida and we have been talking to them and indicated that we don’t have a problem letting him go. He will leave this month and join the Tanzanian side,” Ocholla told Mozzartsport.

Onyango’s departure will be a significant blow for Gor Mahia where he has made the right-back spot his own in the last two-and-a-half seasons, earning him a call-up to the national team where he was also a favourite of former Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat.

The former Wazito ace joined K’Ogalo in 2022 and has won two league titles although his stay has not been without its fair share of troubles.

Onyango was reported to be close to leaving the club last season following claims that an Italian club had expressed an interest but the deal ran into headwinds and also fell out with former coach Leonardo Neiva early this season over a disciplinary issue.

The 23-year-old is currently away on international duty with Harambee Stars who will begin their Mapinduzi Cup campaign against Burkina Faso on Saturday.

Singida Black Stars have been on an upward trajectory this season, sitting fourth on the table on 33 points from 16 matches, six behind leaders Simba SC, who have a game in hand, with Rupia leading the goalscoring chart with eight goals so far.

Meanwhile, Ocholla also confirmed that Gor Mahia will release up to five players this month.
