Gor Mahia have announced that Brazilian head coach Leo Neiva has left his role after terminating his contract with the 21-time FKFPL champions following a tumultuous four months in charge of the side.

Neiva had come under pressure from the demanding Gor Mahia supporters, and was even assaulted by a section of fans, following a recent draw, having watched his team drop 10 points in the last four matches.

K’Ogalo have not tasted victory since beating Poster Rangers on October 19, following it up with a goalless draw against KCB, 2-1 loss to Nairobi City Stars, 2-2 stalemate with Murang’a Seal, when they surrendered a 2-0 lead, before last week’s away loss to Bandari.

It leaves Gor Mahia in an unfamiliar 12th position on the table on eight points, nine behind league leaders KCB, although they have two matches in hand, and Neiva has given reasons why his team are underperforming while remaining confident of a turnaround.

In a statement released on the club’s official social media channels, the club extended gratitude to the Brazilian boss for his “commitment, hard work and contributions” to the club during his short-lived spell at the helm.

“The decision was made after the club management invoked a contractual clause leading to the end of the coach’s tenure effective immediately,” the statement read in part.

The club will now begin the hunt for a new manager “who embodies the values and aspirations” and who “will bring renewed energy” and “strategic insight to the team”.

Neiva was appointed K’Ogalo head coach at the end of last season following the departure of North Irishman Jonathan McKinstry to assume the vacant Gambia national team post.

The 46-year-old has also coached Uganda’s Vipers FC, Sudan’s Al Merreikh and St Kitts, among other teams.

His last stint at Vipers lasted for only 156 days before he was also sent packing after amassing three wins, one draw and one loss in five matches.
