Sports Kenya on Tuesday slapped heavy fines on two of FKF Premier League sides Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards for their fans’ part in vandalizing Nyayo National Stadium during last weekend’s heated Mashemeji Derby.

The penalty sums amount to Ksh 126,000 for Gor Mahia and a steep Ksh 505,450 for AFC Leopards alongside a temporary ban from using any Sports Kenya facility for the latter until the fines are fully paid.

The sanctions come in the wake of significant damage observed at the stadium including broken seats and damaged infrastructure.

According to a copy of a demand note to AFC Leopards seen by Pulse Sports and signed by Rakki Asman, the Stadium Manager at Nyayo National Stadium the costs of repairs and replacements were meticulously calculated leading to the current financial reprimands.

Among the items listed for repair or replacement were a polycarbonate canopy at the players’ tunnel, numerous fixed and portable seats, all-metal shovels, corner flags, and even taps and gate valves.

“Reference is made to the match between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia that was held at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday 21st April 2024. During and after the match, the fans from both teams caused destruction to the Stadium property.

Attached to herewith is a schedule of the damages and the relevant costs apportioned to each team as per our assessment. This is therefore to implore you to take full responsibility and pay the damages and losses thereof as a result of the destruction by the fans of your club.

Please also note that, AFC Leopards FC is hereby banned from using any Sports Kenya facility, whether home or away until the damages are fully paid for and the matter is completely addressed,” it reads.

Also, repairs are needed for the VVIP main door and the plyboard cordon outside Gate 5, among others. The comprehensive list also details the replacement of a 14-gauge sheet metal checker plate at Gate 7, and even Sports Kenya banners that were damaged during the chaos.

The tumultuous events unfolded last Sunday, starting with Austin Odhiambo capitalizing on a defensive lapse in the 30th minute to give Gor Mahia the lead.

The match further escalated when Gor Mahia’s goalkeeper, Kevin Omondi, received a red card five minutes later, reducing the team to ten men.

If the fine remains unpaid the match could face relocation adding logistical challenges and potential revenue losses for the club.
