McKinstry lauds Gor Mahia’s extra weapon that is proving crucial in title run-in

Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry feels his player’s ability to play in different positions is an added advantage to them as they push to retain their title.

K’Ogalo opened an eight-point lead over Tusker FC and Bandari following a goalless draw against Kakamega Homeboyz on Saturday April 6 but it is a game that showcased the flexibility of some of their players.

Right-back Rooney Onyango played in a more advanced role, and would occasionally tuck inside, the same to winger Shariff Musa as Gor Mahia caused Homeboyz plenty of problems in the first half with only poor finishing letting them down.

While Homeboyz later tightened things to force a share of the spoils, it was a display that left McKinstry impressed.

“We know that players can play in different positions, even a few weeks ago, Rooney Onyango finished the game in the no.8 position because [Ernest] Wendo had to come off with a head injury and Rooney went in and did very well,” said McKinstry.

“He is a dynamic player who can play in multiple positions. Shariff played a little more in the no.8 today [Saturday], dropping in and allowing maybe Austin [Odhiambo] a little more freedom. And even Bryson Wangai who is a left-back or left foot.”

Even with the advantage of being able to switch his players’ positions, the Northern Irishman is wary of the negative effects of constantly tinkering with his squad.

“We have a lot of guys who are flexible but consistency is also very important,” added McKinstry.

“If you are changing people’s positions every week then a little bit of confusion can creep in. It is nice that Rooney gets to play a little more advanced for the national team.

“In pre-season, we played him more advanced but when it came to the crunch, we decided we will keep him at right-back.”

Gor Mahia occupy top spot with 51 points with Tusker and Bandari on 43, ahead of the final nine games, and take on Nzoia Sugar next before the Mashemeji derby against AFC Leopards.
