Gor Mahia held by Kakamega HomeBoyz

Gor Mahia missed an opportunity to open up a 10-point lead at the summit of the FKF Premier League table following a goalless draw against Kakamega Homeboyz at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday.

K’Ogalo will blame themselves for failing to get maximum points as they should have scored at least two goals in the first half.

Benson Omalla had an opportunity to open the scoring after 24 minutes with a free header after connecting well with Paul Ochuoga’s cross.

The league’s top scorer showed good centre-forward play to stay in between the two centre-backs but headed just inches wide.

Homeboyz then had their first attempt when Glen Masaba fired a long-range shot that went just over the bar with Kevin Omondi in the K’Ogalo goal stretched.

The enterprising Ochuoga then danced past two of his markers before squaring the ball to the onrushing Shariff Musa but the January signing missed from a few yards when he should have scored.

Austin Odhiambo could come close on the stroke of halftime after cutting through the Homeboyz defence but fired directly at the goalkeeper.

After the break, Homeboyz tightened it at the back, making it difficult for K’Ogalo to roam as they had done in the first half, restricting them to set pieces.

Musa had Gor Mahia’s best chance of the second half when he met Odhiambo’s corner but could not find the target.

Patrick Odhiambo’s men would hold on to claim a priceless point with Gor Mahia now failing to win their last two games in a row.

On a day when Tusker FC and Bandari, the other teams with a realistic chance of winning the title, both lost their matches, Gor Mahia missed a chance to go 10 points clear but still opened up an eight-point lead as they are now on 51 points with nine matches remaining.

Gor Mahia will now focus on the Mashemeji Derby against bitter rivals AFC Leopards next weekend.
