Police arrest Gor Mahia’s 19-game unbeaten run

Kenya Police FC fought back from a goal down to beat Gor Mahia 3-1 at the Police Sacco Stadium to bring an end to their unbeaten league run in their quest to win their 21st FKF Premier League crown.

Owing to the high ticket prices imposed by the home side, not many Gor Mahia fans attended the match, and it is something Kenya Police took full advantage of.

Austin Odhiambo scored the opening goal, but Kenneth Muguna scored the leveler before Tito Okello (both former Gor Mahia players) scored a brace to inspire the side to make a dramatic comeback and grab all three points to put them third on 33 points.

Gor Mahia got off to a flying start when Sharif Musa drove with the ball down the left flank before delivering a cut back which caused confusion in the Kenya Police box before teeing up Odhiambo who found the back of the net.

After that, Police would have loads of possessions but could not do much with it. In the 45th minute, a good move instigated by David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng from the back found David Okoth through on goal before he was fouled by Joshua Onyango right outside the box, giving them a good chance to equalize.

However, Kenneth Muguna’s freekick could only hit the wall, but on the rebound, Cheche’s shot forced Kevin Omondi into making an excellent save to keep his net clean and take the 1-0 lead into the break.

Johnathan McKinstry looked like he wanted to protect the lead, and he subbed on Lawrence Juma for Austin Odhiambo, while Marvine Nabwire and Sammy Onyango were subbed on for Charles Ouma and Alvin Mang’eni respectively with Police coach Salim Babu intent on restoring parity for the hosts.

Before long, Muguna would restore parity in the 59th minute, with the former Gor Mahia man getting on the end of David Okoth’s sweet cross delivered from the left flank.

The Law enforcers continued gunning at Gor Mahia, pressing high and preventing them from leaving their own box with clear intent to take the lead.

Their pressure would bear fruit as Muguna, would turn provider for the second as he set up Okello who received the ball to feet before cutting inside and placing the ball home past a helpless Kevin Omondi in the 74th minute.

Okello would then put the final nail in the coffin with his second goal when he got on the end of Francis Kahata’s delivery, another ex-Gor player.

In the end, Police would hang on to that lead to get all three points, and it now means that Gor Mahia’s quest to win the title unbeaten for the third time in their history is now over.
