Gor Mahia fans are up in arms demanding to know where the original FKF Premier League trophy which Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa unveiled on August 22, 2021.
The 24 gold carat trophy that stands 80cm tall and weighs 11kg and depicts a Maasai warrior holding a football supported by a well-handcrafted base of the big five who are part of the Kenyan wildlife costs 5 million Kenya Shillind as stated by the FKF President.
However, Kenyans were vocal on social media with varying reactions with some feeling the trophy’s design still left a lot of room for improvement and consultations should have been made before deciding on the final design.
As the league title decider went to the last match and the two closest contenders; Gor Mahia and Tusker FC were playing at the same time in Kasarani and Mumias Sports Complex respectively, many fans believe that the original trophy was placed at Mumiax Complex.
Tusker FC became the closest contender in the first half of their match in Mumias as they took a 1-0 lead, putting immense pressure on Gor Mahia, who had struggled to find the back of the net in the first half of their own game.
However, the second halves of both matches presented a different narrative. At Kasarani, Nairobi City Stars began the second half with an early goal, leaving Gor Mahia in a position where they needed to make a comeback. Gor Mahia managed to equalize and went on to score three more goals, sealing the comeback.
But what K’Ogalo was presented was different after winning the KPL title for the 20th time, raising questions about whereabout the original trophy.
And FKF in their wisdom or lack of it, had written off Gor and took the original trophy to Mumias, mayiethey forgot Juogi and Mahia are untamed…they thrashed that team and were crowned the #20XCHAMPIONS. We now await the official hand over of this trophy and medals with GMFC colours, respect the game. Rozzy Lilian Otili
