Bragging rights set as “Mashemeji” derby set on Mashujaa day

It is always a huge event in the African football calendar with the whole continent and a good part of the World so keen to have a glimpse of the most talked-about “Mashemeji” derby in Kenya Premier League.

But this time Gor Mahia vs AFC Leopards clash scheduled for Wednesday Mashujaa Day at Moi Sports Center – Kasarani has been termed as the lowest in the history of Kenya football with no hype whatsoever.

K’Ogalo is yet to taste any threat by the art-rival AFC Leopards since March 6th, 2016 where Gor Mahia lost 1-0 at Kasarani under the head coach Frank Nutall.

Gor Mahia head coach Mark Harrison has set his eyes on the game after a great outing in Egypt in a CAF Confederation Cup match against South Sudanese side Al-Ahly Merowe where the team won 3-1.

Harrison explained the importance of winning the match on Wednesday and the impact it will inject to K’Ogalo loyal fans base.

“Derbies all across the world mean so much to people. I’ve played in derbies as a player and I’ve coached in other derbies as well. I understand the importance of winning this game for everybody involved with the football club and the supporters. We go into the game with a positive mindset and try to get the three points if we can. We have to respect the opposition because we know it is going to be a battle,” the head coach said when speaking to the sports news channel – Mozzart Sport on Tuesday.

This will be the 90th edition of the Mashemeji Derby since the two largest teams in Kenya were founded and its will be a great honor for the new K’Ogalo head coach to maintain the winning mentality from his predecessors since 2016.
