Tribute to Gor Mahia legend Shamba

Gor Mahia is mourning one of its legend Hamisi Shamba, who went to be with the Lord on Tuesday 30th June 2020.

A product of Central Primary School – Kisumu and Kisumu Boys for his high school studies, where he was described as a natural leader whom everyone would want to have as part of their team, an enthusiast team leader who captained Kisumu Boys.

Before joining Gor Mahia, Hamisi played for Hot star alongside Gideon Khamisi, Roswell Otieno, Wycliff Odhiambo Ngola, Juma Yunis, Owiti Malaria, Dick Otiende, Kajole and many other amazing players.

Hamisi joined Gor Mahia FC in the early 1979 from Kisumu Hot Stars, but did not have much playtime for he was playing the same role as the indomitable Bob Ogola and therefore could at times play defensive midfield.

His friends, including the former Gor player James Goro described him as a promising and ambitious defender who was ready to go down for his team just to ensure victory. His hard work and persistency made his couch always brave as he knew they got the almighty Shamba in control.

” He was good in the air and tough on the ground a class of his own as we refer to him. His duels with Erick Omonge were memorable and it always brought the game to an end when it went physical” added Goro.

“Shamba was an excellent, disciplined, and talented central defender. His sterling performances saw him play for the national team Harambee Stars before hanging his boots in 1986”, narrated Gor Mahia CEO Omondi Aduda.

“Although I did not enjoy playing alongside Shamba at Gor Mahia, I knew him as a great player and always played his heart out ensuring that the team won,” Said Gor Mahia legend Peter Dawo.

During his days at Gor, Shamba worked at Kenya-Re. He was also in the CDF of Kisumu West constituency and has been a close associate of Hon. Olago Aluoch.

Shamba will be remembered for his degree of discipline and command in the field. The legend hung up his boots in 1982.

The legend was laid to rest in Mkendwa sub-location in Kisumu West sub-county on 30th June. He leaves a wife and three children.
