History beckons for Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia are on the brink of making CAF Confederations Cup history as they face Angola’s Petro Athletico tomorrow (Sunday) at the Kasarani as from 7pm.

A win will see Gor Mahia become the first team from Kenya to go past the group stage of the competition.

Last season, Gor Mahia added another element to its rich history by being the first team from the country to reach the group stage of any CAF club competition since it was reformatted to include group stages. They then narrowly missed the quarter-finals after suffering two losses in their final group matches.

Gor Mahia will also be looking forward to beating an Angolan side for the first time in continental competition. Before losing their first tie 1-2 in Luanda several weeks back, Gor Mahia had previously played AS Aviacao in the quarter-finals of CAF Cup in 1993, playing both legs to a barren draw before bowing out on post-match penalties.

After beginning the group D fixtures with a huge win against Egyptian side Zamalek, Gor Mahia suffered a loss to Petro in Angola before going top of the group with a win against Algeria’s NA Hussein Dey in Nairobi. Two defeats in the reverse tie against the two North African teams have seen them remain stuck in a tight spot in the group and only a win guarantees progress.

Gor Mahia is currently on a four game winning streak at home in CAF competitions and the Green Army will be expecting nothing short of a win.
