Gor Mahia host Leopards in crunch derby

Gor Mahia will take on arch-rivals AFC Leopards on Saturday (Feb 9th) in the Mashemeji derby at Kasarani from 3pm.

This will be a significant match for both clubs as K’Ogalo will be looking forward to continue their upward climb in the league with what could be their 5th win in six league matches while the limping Leopard have suffered four defeats in their last five league games and are sinking fast towards the bottom of the league standing.

Gor Mahia will be going into this match buoyed by their incredible display in thrashing African football giants Zamalek of Egypt that was followed by a league win over Vihiga United in a mid-week clash.

Leopards on the other hand have had to deal with a myriad of off-field issues and poor form. Gor Mahia will be going into this match wary of the fact that derbies can often spring surprises. One has to look back at the 2012 first leg encounter when an on form Leopard that was then topping the league was held by a K’Ogalo side that was then encountering off-field issues and were on one of their worst league runs in modern times.

Having done a double over AFC Leopards the previous season, Gor Mahia will be looking forward to a third consecutive league derby win, a feat that previous K’Ogalo teams have been unable to achieve.

The last time any of these sides won three consecutive league derbies was way back in 1985 and 1986 when AFC Leopards won 3 on the trot.

In the last few years, Gor Mahia have been the dominant side. In the last 10 league meetings, Gor Mahia have won five times while losing only twice and drawing thrice while outscoring Leopards 16 to nine goals.

Fact file:

Last 10 Meetings
Gor Mahia wins 5
AFC Leopards wins 2
Draws 3
Gor Mahia goals 16
AFC Leopards goals 9

As Gor Mahia gets their momentum going, and prepares to take on Angolan side Petro de Luanda in their next CAF Confederations Cup in the course of the week, the club is urging its fans to turn out in large numbers and cheer their team to victory.
